The hilly terrain next to the old Sprocket house that Meg Langslow and her fiancé, Michael, are refurbishing is the perfect location for an extreme croquet field - even the legs of cows and sheep are convenient extra wickets. Croquet has become all the rage in Caerphilly...until it appears someone in town has taken the rage a bit too literally. While stumbling down a steep bank after her ball, Meg encounters the body of a fresh female corpse with a mallet-sized dent in her head. If that isn't reason enough to call a timeout, it turns out that Michael knew the woman from years before. Ever curious, Meg decides that playing armchair sleuth is far more important than working on her game.

No Nest for the Wicket (Audible Audio Edition) Donna Andrews Bernadette Dunne LLC Dreamscape Media Books

I had really begun to believe that Donna could write about anything under the sun - a wait at a doctor's office, an afternoon of painting the walls - and have it end up hilarious. I was just SO pleased with the last three books she created, and the environment and characters she had populated them with.

With this book, Donna comes down to earth. That's not to say I disliked the book. It was quite interesting, set in a tournament of eXtreme croquet in her back yard. You get the fun family members as well as a collection of newcomers to interact. Still, the previous books were just so amazing, with numerous laugh out loud moments and great insights. With this book, things were "fine". It's almost as if Donna had gotten so used to her great successes that she put things on cruise control a bit.

One thing which bugs me about these books is that Meg has been dealing with dead bodies repeately over the years - but every time she encounters a new one it's as if she's never seen one before at all. The cop in this one - a cop who knows her from previous stories - even makes a comment that she shouldn't be squeamish because she has a doctor for a father. How about she shouldn't be squeamish because bodies fall dead around her at a regular rate! I'm not sure I understand why this is an issue for the writer. When we read about other mystery series, we know the main characters have seen death. We know it's a series. There's no need to pretend in every book of Nancy Drew that she has just become a detective and has never faced danger before. I don't see a need here to treat Meg as an innocent every time out.

I also found the plot here a little repetitive compared with previous plots. I knew right away who the killer was and then simply had to wait for the story to unfold to find that out. As usual, Meg doesn't realize the truth until the last possible moment. I suppose you could say her charm is that she 1) feels grumpy about finding bodies and 2) blunders Clouseau-like around until the killer prepares to take her out. I just wish she'd do a little better with her investigation. She is, after all, an intelligent woman. Some of the clues she misses are pretty obvious.

Still, it's nice to see the progression of some of the characters, and the flaws in others. These aren't perfect people by any stretch of the imagination - but they still get along and love each other. It gives hope to the rest of us!

No Nest for the Wicket (Audible Audio Edition) Donna Andrews Bernadette Dunne LLC Dreamscape Media Books Reviews

I really love these early Donna Andrews mysteries. I really like her hilarious family and the mystery was very good also.
Donna Andrews is getting better with each book. Extreme croquet sounds like fun! Of course Meg finds a body and we get to follow along as she and Micheal finds the truth. We find out more about Micheal's past and I am glad that he is now has a past. I will admit, I was able to figure out who the murderer was quite early but that didn't bother me. The characters of the Dames were lovely.

I love the ending - Mother and Father and the farm next door. Perfect. Duck, and the ducklings, will have a pond. Spike, my favorite character, will have many woodland creatures to terrorize. And in the next book, maybe a wedding! I will be looking forward to that.
While stumbling down a steep bank after her ball, Meg encounters the body of a fresh female corpse with a mallet-sized dent in her head. If that isn't reason enough to call a time-out, it turns out that Michael knew the woman from years before. Ever curious, Meg decides that playing arm-chair sleuth is far more important than working on her game…and soon she finds herself in the perfect position to solve the murder mystery--or become the next victim.
Meg's family is hosting an eXtreme croquet tournament near Meg's house, and Meg has gotten roped into playing. Not that she hates it, but the sport is a little wild for her tastes.

After Meg's ball gets roqueted into a gully, Meg finds a dead body. While the woman had obviously been hit by a croquet mallet, she wasn't playing in the tournament. In fact, Meg and the other contestants have no idea who she is.

It's Michael who makes the identification. The victim used to be a professor at the local college and had made quite a few enemies in town. What was she doing back in the area? And who knew about it and wanted to kill her?

This series has become a favorite because of the great plots and the laugh out loud moments. Unfortunately, this entry doesn't live up to the last couple. Mainly, it was because the book wasn't as funny as it could have been. Much of the humor has been done before and better in the earlier books. Not that this book isn't enjoyable. I still found myself laughing and smiling, just not as much as previously.

Fortunately, the plot is very engaging. There are several twists and plenty of red herrings before the final solution is revealed. I did feel the climax was a bit abrupt, but it was logical.

The returning characters are their usual charming selves. It's always a pleasure to spend time with Meg and her family even if murder is the result. The new characters are interesting as well. They could have used a little more development, but I could easily keep everyone straight.

While not up to the usual standards for this series, this is still a book well worth reading. It's a fast moving mystery that will keep you entertained from start to finish.
Meg Langslow, a blacksmith, and her husband, an attractive professor, and her father, a physician combine again in a murder mystery which occurs in the fields surrounding Meg's home. The body is found during a grueling extreme croquet marathon. From determining whom the deceased is, to how she was murdered, and who did it, the prose is fast paced, the writing excellent.
Croquet has gone extreme and Langslow hobby has taken on outsiders. When Meg falls down a slope searching for a ball she literally falls on a body. No one claims to recognize her, but everyone knows her including Meg sort of. Lots of motives are lying around outlet malls, Civil War battlefields, and academic rivalries are all on the table. Really entertaining if highly implausible that so many of her relatives are lying around yet again an hour plus from home.
